Dave Grohl Asked To Play Nirvana Unplugged For 25th Anniversary

TheWest.com.au is reporting that Dave Grohl has been asked to perform Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged live album with an orchestra in its entirety as the 25th anniversary of the performance approaches.

Perth Symphony Orchestra hope to snare Dave Grohl for their reworking of Nirvana’s iconic Unplugged in New York album with some canny marketing.

Following a one-minute video of the orchestra performing Smells Like Teen Spirit, the camera hovers on an empty drum stool with a sign: “Reserved for Mr Grohl”.

Founder and executive director Bourby Webster says the PSO has a personal connection to the Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer.

“We have a hunch he’d love to perform with an orchestra and he’s known for being impulsive,” she said. “So we thought we had nothing to lose.”

The PSO performs Unplugged: Nirvana Reimagined with End of Fashion singer Justin Burford at His Majesty’s on September 28, with or without Mr Grohl.

Since Kurt Cobain’s death, Dave Grohl has only played Nirvana songs twice: for two New York shows in April 2014 with his surviving bandmates to celebrate Nirvana’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. The surviving members of Nirvana did cover David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World” in 2016 with Beck, a song that was originally part of the MTV Unplugged performance. Grohl also teases drumming “Smells Like Teen Spirit” at Foo Fighters shows.
